Postgraduate Degrees:
There are a range of postgraduate degrees that a medical doctor can apply for. Some of those are taught degrees, others are research degrees. The advantages of doing one of those degrees are plenty, here are some
1.Getting a degree from a renowned University means you get to do your own dissertation, research, poster ,etc, all of which you need on your C.V to apply to the match. Not only that but the universities that grant you such degrees make sure they academically teach you the necessary skills to prepare your own dissertation or conduct your research.
2.Such formal kind of education is being funded by a vast number of scholarship bodies, many of which are situated in Egypt and grant Egyptian Students both the tuition fees and the living expenses, so basically you will get this education for free overcoming the financial constraints that you may face if you wish to spend a year of informal research experience by volunteering in any American university.
3.Getting a Degree from Harvard , Stanford USA or from Cambridge, Oxford U.K is something worth adding to your C.V, you are a graduate of those universities right now, hence more recognition and more job opportunities

This is just an illustration to some Masters degrees that are available for medical doctors, they are not inclusive of all the degrees available. Every Institution offers its own degrees and concentrations. There are PhD Degrees, you can even apply for an MBA as a medical doctor. It depends primarily on your interest and future plan.
How Long does it take to finish such a degree?
It all depends on the degree and the institution, If you are doing a masters degree, it will probably take a year , however some institutions make it two. A PhD takes longer than a masters degree (usually 3-5 years or more)
How do I apply to those degrees?
Most of your application procedures will be made online. There are 2 applications you will need to fill, one to the University of Interest and one to the scholarship foundation that will fund your studies. The most important factor in applying is the TIMING. Universities and Scholarship Foundations have strict admission criteria and very early deadlines after which they don’t accept further applications even if you are a better candidate so you need to fulfil your admissions criteria and manage your time so as not to miss an opportunity that comes only once a year.
What are the admission criteria?
Again those criteria differ from one university to another, but there are 3 main issues that you have to fulfil before applying to most American Universities
•Pass an English Test: This English test which is either the TOEFL or the ILets is a must before applying to most American and U.K Universities. You cannot enroll as an international student in one of those universities without proving a certain competency in the English language, therefore passing is not enough for this test but you need to get the minimum acceptable score specified by your university of interest. There are a few schools that will waive the test if the language of instruction of your undergraduate studies was English. Those exams are widely taken all over Egypt. More information on where, how, when and how much is on that website www.ets.org
•Pass the GRE (for U.S Universities only): The Graduate Record Examination is a standardized exam taken by all students inside and outside the U.S.A who wish to join a graduate school in the States. You will be asked to sit such an exam as part of your application to many American universities. The exam components are Maths and English. There are Universities which can waive this exam if you submit a proof of your M.D (M.B.BCh) or any of your USMLE steps, however other Universities consider it a must. More information is found on www.ets.org
•Online Application : your online application is equivalent to your C.V except that every University has a special format with which you enter your personal and career details.. your application is a reflection of you and it’s what will determine whether you get accepted or not. This includes your education history, postgraduate job/training, personal statement, letters of recommendation.
How many Universities do I apply to?
•This depends on how much money you have and how many long applications you are prepared to fill. Some universities allow you to apply for free or for a very small fee (Mostly U.K universities), Others may require a somewhat high fee (U.S universities). A wise step is to apply to more than one University to maximize your chances of getting accepted in one.
